Kapitel 1: Der Anruf

Am Samstagmorgen klingelte mein Telefon. Es war meine Oma, Gerda. Sie hat eine sehr freundliche Stimme. "Hallo! Hast du morgen Zeit?", fragte sie. "Ich möchte dich zum Kaffee und Kuchen einladen."

In Deutschland plant man Termine oft im Voraus. Man besucht niemanden spontan ohne Anruf. "Ja, gerne, Oma!", antwortete ich. "Komm bitte pünktlich um 15:00 Uhr", sagte sie. 15:00 Uhr ist die traditionelle Zeit für Kaffee. Ich schrieb den Termin sofort in meinen Kalender. Pünktlichkeit ist sehr wichtig in meiner Familie.

On Saturday morning, my phone rang. It was my grandma, Gerda. She has a very friendly voice. "Hello! Do you have time tomorrow?" she asked. "I would like to invite you for coffee and cake." In Germany, appointments are often planned in advance. You don't visit anyone spontaneously without a call. "Yes, gladly, Grandma!" I answered. "Please come punctually at 3:00 PM," she said. 3:00 PM is the traditional time for coffee. I wrote the appointment immediately in my calendar. Punctuality is very important in my family.

Ich hörte keine Rasenmäher und keine laute Musik. Es ist verboten, am Sonntag laut zu sein. Man darf auch keine Glasflaschen in den Container werfen, weil das zu laut ist. Ich genoss die Ruhe und las ein Buch im Bett. Es war sehr entspannend.

On Sunday morning, I woke up. It was very quiet in my street. In Germany, Sunday is a "rest day." That means most shops are closed. No one works in the office and trucks are not allowed to drive on the highway. I heard no lawnmowers and no loud music. It is forbidden to be loud on Sunday. You are also not allowed to throw glass bottles into the recycling container because that is too loud. I enjoyed the quiet and read a book in bed. It was very relaxing.

Aber die Supermärkte waren zu! Ich hatte ein Problem. Dann erinnerte ich mich: Blumenläden am Bahnhof sind oft sonntags geöffnet. Ich lief schnell zum Bahnhof. Zum Glück war der Laden offen. Ich kaufte einen schönen Strauß mit gelben Tulpen. Oma liebt die Farbe Gelb. Jetzt war ich bereit.

It was 2:00 PM. I had to get ready. I didn't want to visit Grandma with empty hands. It is polite to have a small "gift." Normally, I buy chocolates or flowers. But the supermarkets were closed! I had a problem. Then I remembered: Flower shops at the train station are often open on Sundays. I walked quickly to the train station. Luckily, the shop was open. I bought a beautiful bouquet with yellow tulips. Grandma loves the color yellow. Now I was ready.
