How to use "Have to" and "Don't have to"

Today, we are learning how to talk about things that are necessary (rules) and things that are not necessary (choices).

1. When it is necessary: "Have to"

We use have to when there is a rule or when something is necessary.

  • I / You / We / They: Use have to.
    • Example: I have to go to the ATM.
  • He / She / It: Use has to.
    • Example: He has to work tonight.

2. When it is NOT necessary: "Don't have to"

We use don't have to when you have a choice. It means something is not necessary. You can do it if you want, but you don't need to.

  • I / You / We / They: Use don't have to.
    • Example: I don't have to work until later.
  • He / She / It: Use doesn't have to.
    • Example: She doesn't have to study tonight.

3. How to ask questions

To ask about rules, we use Do or Does.

  • Do you have to...?
    • Question: Do you have to study tonight?
    • Answer: Yes, I do. / No, I don't.
  • Does she have to...?
    • Question: Does she have to work tonight?
    • Answer: Yes, she does. / No, she doesn't.
