Using Reported Speech for Surprises

Sometimes, a person tells you something that is different or the opposite of what you heard before. This is a "contradiction." We can use reported speech to point out this surprising or unexpected information.

Imagine you hear this now: "Sue is coming to the party tonight."

But you remember she said something different before. You can respond:

"Is she? I saw her a few days ago and she said she wasn't coming."

In this exercise, you will respond to a surprising statement by reporting what you heard earlier.

Practice Exercise

Respond to statement 'A' by reporting what you heard before. Use your own ideas to complete the sentence for 'B'.
