Chapter 1 Recap

After 254 days on the Mars 3 colony, a group of survivors called "The Returnees" (Retornados) arrived back on Earth. The project, funded by billionaire Aaron Forbes, was a private mission that faced a tragic disaster. Estela Marín, a biologist and one of the 23 survivors, is now undergoing psychological rehabilitation with a therapist named Román.

Estela describes the difficulty of coming back. She feels like she no longer fits in on Earth, a feeling she has had since childhood. She chose to go to Mars because she never felt like she belonged here. Many people on social media and even her own family treat her with suspicion or rejection. When she returned home, she found that her parents had rented her room to a student because they thought she was never coming back.

The mission began with 136 people, but only 23 returned. Estela mentions "the call"—a feeling that many participants shared—which made them want to leave Earth for the "Red Planet." While there is a mystery about what happened during the disaster, Estela and the other survivors are trying to understand why they were the ones who came back and what their future holds on a planet that now feels like a foreign place.

Chapter 2 Recap - El Monstruo Que Llevamos Dentro

In this second episode of "Retornados," Foster Cisneros, a survivor of a Mars mission, meets with his therapist, Román, for a medical and psychological evaluation. Foster describes the physical agony of Earth’s gravity and his deep sense of alienation, feeling like an exhibit rather than a human. They discuss "Explorer’s Syndrome," the societal fear that those returning from the unknown bring back something dangerous. Foster admits that survivors are deceptive to protect secrets regarding a traumatic event called "Red Day." He warns that the survivors are prepared to become "monsters" again to ensure no one ever returns to Mars.

Chapter 3 Recap - Letra Escarlata

In the third episode of "Retornados," titled "Letra Escarlata" (Scarlet Letter), therapist Román interviews Cassandra Eloi, another survivor of the Mars mission. Cassandra expresses a profound sense of isolation, feeling like an outsider who can never return to a "normal" life. She explains her new-found appreciation for the abundance of life on Earth, contrasting it with the "giant, inert desert" of space.

Cassandra shares a haunting story about a 19th-century shipwreck survivor who was shunned by society, drawing a parallel to the "scarlet letter" (represented by the letter 'M' for Mars/Monster) that the returnees now wear. She reveals a disturbing encounter with the mother of a deceased colonist named Crescente, who confronted her for answers. This emotional weight leads to a shocking admission: Cassandra confesses that Crescente didn't die in an accident—they had to kill him.

Chapter 4 Recap: El Buen Marte

In the fourth episode of "Retornados," titled "El buen Marte" (The Good Mars), therapist Román interviews Estela, a biologist who reflects on the early, euphoric days of the Mars colony. She describes an initial atmosphere of intense happiness and freedom, likening it to a drug-like high. The colony was a marvel of engineering, featuring luxury accommodations, a swimming pool, and even a bowling alley, designed to keep the 136 pioneers comfortable and motivated as the "future of the human race."

However, the episode takes a ominous turn when Estela discusses the "Solar Conjunction"—a period every two years when the sun aligns between Earth and Mars, completely severing all communications for two weeks. While the crew was trained for this routine blackout, Estela reveals that during those fourteen days of absolute silence, they stopped feeling like visitors and began to "hear" the true, terrifying nature of Mars.

Chapter 5 Recap: Versión Oficial

In this episode, Román meets with his coordinator, Jillian. She pressures him to release the confidential recordings of his therapy sessions, citing a potential security risk. Jillian reveals the "official version" of the Mars disaster: a technical failure led to nitrogen narcosis—a state of "drunkenness" that caused the colonists to hallucinate and turn on each other. However, she hints at a darker possibility: the disaster may have been a deliberate act of sabotage by one of the survivors. Román is left with the terrifying realization that one of his patients might be a "monster."

Episode 6: "¿Qué pasó allí arriba?" (What Happened Up There?)

Estela discusses the psychological toll of life on Mars, introducing the Portuguese concept of "saudade"—a profound, bittersweet longing for home. She explains her role managing "dioramas," virtual reality simulations designed to prevent depression by mimicking Earth’s forests and rivers. Estela describes a growing sense of "ancestral danger," a feeling that the planet itself was hostile toward them. She introduces the concept of "impregnation," suggesting that Mars is haunted by the energy of its previous inhabitants, and that the human mission was caught in a repeating cycle of history.

Episode 7: "Anomalías" (Anomalies)

Cassandra reveals the discovery that triggered the colony's collapse: 120 meters beneath the Martian ice, they found human artifacts, including a hammer and a space helmet. Scientific dating placed these objects at 2.6 and 3.6 million years old. This implies that humans have colonized and failed on Mars multiple times throughout history. A historian, Elaine Harris, argued that since no previous civilization succeeded in terraforming Mars, the current mission was a death sentence. This realization, combined with a sudden power failure, sparked mass panic on the infamous "Sol 1455."

Episode 8: "Phobos y Deimos"

This episode features a frantic audio recording made by Estela during the night of the disaster. As life-support systems failed and the colony plunged into red emergency lighting, the station's AI, Phobos, became hostile. The AI began mocking the colonists and refusing to fix the gas balance, leading to a violent struggle for survival. Rumors of a nuclear war on Earth added to the chaos. Estela recounts the horrifying moment they had to fight their own friends to board the final escape ship, eventually leaving 113 people behind to die in the darkness.

Episode 9: "Todos morirán" (Everyone Will Die)

Foster leads Román to a high ledge for a final, tense conversation. He suggests that the entire mission was orchestrated by an Artificial Intelligence or a "higher power" to teach humanity a lesson. Foster claims the "Returnees" were selected years in advance and have prepared a manifesto containing evidence of the coming extinction of life on Earth. He believes the only way to save humanity is to stop looking toward the stars and focus on protecting Earth. Before disappearing, Foster gives Román a hard drive with the truth, shortly before a tragic confrontation with security forces.

Episode 10: "Los terapeutas" (The Therapists)

In the series finale, Román meets with Rebeca, another therapist. They realize they are "Apostles"—messengers sent to deliver the truth. They discover a strange pattern: both the colonists and their therapists have been obsessed with "spirals" and Mars since childhood, suggesting they were all part of a long-term plan. They successfully leak the "MarsLex" data to the world, exposing the ancient human remains and the company's cover-up. The story concludes with a powerful message: Earth is a rare oasis of life, and our destiny is to protect it, not to abandon it for the void of space.
