It is a sunny Saturday morning in Sydney. Tom wants to go to the beach. He walks to the bus stop at Bondi Junction. There are many people waiting. Everyone is wearing shorts and sunglasses. Tom gets on the blue bus, number 333. He taps his Opal card to pay for the ride.

The bus drives down the hill towards the ocean. Suddenly, Tom sees the blue water. It looks beautiful and sparkling. The bus stops near the Bondi Pavilion. Tom steps off the bus and smells the salty air. He is very excited for his day.

Tom walks onto the soft, yellow sand. There are hundreds of people on the beach. He looks for a safe place to swim. In Australia, it is very important to swim "between the flags." He sees two red and yellow flags near the water.

A surf lifesaver is standing there. She wears a red and yellow uniform. "Hello," she says. "Please stay between the flags. The currents are strong today." Tom nods. He knows that the water outside the flags can be dangerous. He puts his towel down on the sand and feels safe.

The sun is getting hotter. It is 11:00 AM. Tom remembers the Australian rule for sun safety: "Slip, Slop, Slap." He slips on a shirt to cover his shoulders. Then, he slops on some sunscreen. He puts it on his face, arms, and legs.

Finally, he slaps on a hat. The Australian sun is very strong, even on cloudy days. Tom does not want to get a sunburn. He drinks some water from his bottle. Staying hydrated is also important. Now he is ready to play in the sun without getting hurt.

Tom wants to try surfing. He rents a large, soft surfboard from a shop. He also puts on a "rashie," a special shirt for surfing. He meets his instructor, Dave. Dave shows Tom how to paddle with his arms.

"When the wave comes, jump up quickly!" Dave says. They go into the shallow water. A small wave comes behind Tom. He paddles hard. He tries to stand up, but he falls into the water. Splash! Tom laughs. He tries again. This time, he stands up for three seconds. He feels like a champion.

After surfing, Tom is very hungry. Surfing is hard work. He walks to a shop across the street to buy lunch. He orders fish and chips. "Would you like chicken salt?" the woman asks. "Yes, please!" Tom says. Chicken salt is a famous yellow salt in Australia.

He takes his food to the grassy hill. He opens the paper package. The chips are hot and salty. Suddenly, a white seagull flies down. It wants a chip! "Go away!" Tom says. He protects his lunch. The food tastes delicious after swimming in the ocean.

Tom walks to the south end of the beach. He sees a famous white building called "Bondi Icebergs." There is a large swimming pool right next to the ocean. The waves from the sea crash over the wall and into the pool. It looks amazing.

Tom pays to enter. He touches the water with his toe. "Ooh, it is freezing!" he yells. The water in the pool is colder than the sea. He jumps in quickly. He swims laps while watching the ocean waves. It is a very special experience.

Tom dries off and puts on his shoes. He sees a path on the cliffs. This is the Coastal Walk. He decides to walk to the next beach, Tamarama. The path goes up and down along the rocks.

The view is incredible. He can see boats far away on the horizon. The rocks have strange shapes because of the wind and water. Many people are running and walking here for exercise. Tom stops to take a photo. The ocean looks deep blue and endless. It is peaceful away from the busy sand.

Tom walks back to Bondi Beach. It is late afternoon now. He sees a group of friends playing a game on the sand. They have a plastic yellow bat and a tennis ball. They are playing beach cricket.

"Do you want to play?" a man asks Tom. "Sure!" Tom replies. He holds the bat. The man throws the ball. Tom hits it high into the air! Everyone cheers. Beach cricket is a popular summer game in Australia. It is not about winning; it is about having fun with mates.

The sun is starting to go down. The sky turns orange and pink. Tom meets his friends at the back of the beach. There are free electric barbecues in the park. They are cooking dinner.

They put sausages, or "snags," on the hot metal plate. They also cook onions. The smell is wonderful. Tom puts a sausage on a slice of white bread. He adds tomato sauce. This is a classic Australian meal. They sit on the grass, eat, and watch the sunset.

It is dark now. The day at Bondi Beach is over. Tom is very tired. His skin feels salty and his hair is messy. He has sand in his shoes, but he does not care. He feels happy and relaxed.

He walks back to the bus stop. He gets on the bus to go home. He looks at his photos on his phone. He sees the blue water, the white waves, and his friends. "What a great day," Tom thinks. He closes his eyes and falls asleep on the ride home.
