School Days: UK vs. USA – What's Different?

Have you ever wondered if school in the UK is the same as in the USA? Even though they both speak English, their education systems are quite different! Let's explore.
In the USA, students usually go to school from Kindergarten to 12th grade (K-12). When you are in high school (about 14-18 years old), you study many subjects – like English, science, math, and history. You can also choose many extra classes, like art or music. Students usually choose their main study area, called a "major," when they go to university. Your grades depend on homework, projects, and tests. Big exams like the SATs are important for applying to university. Joining school clubs or sports (extracurricular activities) is also very important for university applications!
Now, let's look at the UK. Formal schooling for most children starts around age 4 in "Reception" class. This is like a first step before primary school. A big difference in the UK is that students start to choose their study path earlier. When you are about 14-16 years old, you take important exams called GCSEs. After that, for your last two years (ages 16-18), you choose only 3 or 4 subjects to study very deeply for your A-Levels. These A-Levels help you get ready for a specific course at university. Most university degrees in the UK are shorter, usually three years. University admission mainly depends on your A-Level results. You will also see many students in the UK wearing school uniforms!
Both countries want students to learn a lot, but they have their own special ways of doing it!
