The Case of the Serpent's Eye

Detective Miles Corbin stood in the silent, oak-paneled study, the scent of old books and fresh rain hanging in the air. Before him, a frantic Mr. Blackwood pointed a trembling finger at an empty velvet pedestal inside a glass case. The Serpent's Eye, a necklace of staggering value, was gone.
"It was here just an hour ago!" Blackwood insisted. "The room was locked. The thief must have picked the lock!"
Corbin knelt, examining the heavy oak door. There were no scratches, no signs of tampering. "A professional could have done it cleanly," he murmured to himself, "but it's unlikely."
His eyes swept the room. A large window showed the rainy garden, and its latch was broken. "They might have come through the window," suggested Officer Evans, his young partner.
Corbin walked over and looked down. The study was on the second floor, a sheer drop to the stone patio below. "No footprints in the mud beneath, and no ladder. Someone couldn't have reached this window from the outside without help. The broken latch is a distraction."
Corbin turned his attention back to the room's occupants during the theft: Mr. Blackwood, his nervous nephew Leo, and a rival collector, the elegant Ms. Dubois.
"Mr. Blackwood, you were hosting a dinner party," Corbin stated. "So the thief must have been one of your guests, or the staff."
He considered the nephew, Leo, who was fidgeting in the corner. The young man was known to have gambling debts. "He may have been desperate for money," Corbin thought.
Then there was Ms. Dubois. She had publicly offered to buy the necklace last week. Her desire was no secret. "She could have created a plan to steal it," Corbin mused.
He walked back to the glass case. There was a faint, sweet smell in the air. Jasmine. He’d noticed Ms. Dubois was wearing a jasmine-scented perfume.
"Ms. Dubois," Corbin said calmly. "You were in this room tonight, weren't you?"
She looked startled. "I... I just wanted another look. I wouldn't steal it!"
Corbin nodded slowly. "Perhaps not." He noticed a small, muddy smudge on the carpet near the bookshelf, partially hidden by a chair. It was small, too small for a man's shoe. He turned to the quiet housemaid, Maria, who had been standing by the door, wringing her hands.
"There's fresh mud on the carpet, Maria," Corbin said quietly, his voice soft but clear. "And you're the only one who was in the garden."
Maria burst into tears, her shoulders shaking. "I'm so sorry! I didn't mean any harm. My son... he's so sick. I needed money for the doctor. I hid it. I was going to put it back!" she sobbed, pointing a trembling finger toward the bookshelf. "It's in the big green book about explorers."
Corbin walked to the bookshelf, pulled out the book, and opened it. Inside, nestled within a hollowed-out section, lay the Serpent's Eye, its emerald centerpiece glittering under the lamp light.
